Message I dont believe in that not because I dont want criminals caught, but because I dont want to see normal law obeying citizens get harassed because some cop has a chip on his shoulder. Ive seen good cops and I've seen bad cops. A good cop doesn't mean he lets people off, it means he takes all things into consideration and interprets whether or not someone is really guilty of something. At the first level, he's the judge, the jury, and the executioner. That kind of authority carries a lot of responsibility and an officer must keep in touch with what really should be punishable and what shouldn't. There's a LOT of grey area out there.

I recall a couple of years back, it was graduation (not mine) and all of the students were out and about that evening. I was following some people to their apartment that I had met up at the Ale House and they took some different route. I knew what apartment complex it was, but not which apartment so I needed to catch them at the apartment entrance. So I'm flying full boost down a 35MPH 2lane road, come to a stop sign, stopped the car for a split second and was back on the gas for a right hander. That right hander quickly turned into a left hand 180 degree powerslide to u-turn a median. I WAS WOT. =) As soon as I came 180 around that median, what did I see? Goddamn gumball machine again. He apparently had been trying to catch me for some time and when we were talking about it, he said he thought I was actually trying to get away from him. He did comment on the 180 powerslide; "Looks like you have driven your car that way before." =) He gave me a field sobriety test, I had 1 drink a couple hours prior so I was cool. Then he gave me back my driver's license and told me to slow it down and good luck finding my friends.

Well, besides the fact that the experience totally sucked the lifeblood out of my party mood, I did find great satisfaction to know that this officer was really looking out for my good. The fact he didn't take me to jail for reckless driving, no tickets whatsoever, and that he listened to me when I told him I was only driving like that because of the circumstances I mentioned above.

Now, I do feel like I got away a bit easy on that one. At least a speeding ticket. But this guy wasn't some young cockhead, he looked like he has kids and was wearing a wedding band. These are the real officers. They dont let their testosterone get the best of them - their jobs are relatively mediocre and uneventful. These young cops get themselves all pumped and siked, which is a good thing physiologically as it prepares them for the worst, but then they cant calm down when it is apparent that they didn't just pull over the unibomber.

Good cop. Bad Cop. =)
